Robyn,
Reading this detailed description was very helpful in visualizing/creating my understanding of what the Global Nuclear Apocalypse would physically and emotionally look like. You depict (in a compelling way) a horrific situation by creating a fitting feeling in your writing which makes it illustrative. The most accurate picture seems to be that no one will survive as you mention there will be a “mass suicide/ genocide”, by destruction of other living beings we destroy our selves- however in the nuclear war this is more direct, but it is a good metaphor for the current ecocide. What does a bomb symbolize? A good image is that of one establishment launching a nuclear bomb as another’s bomb approaches them; reminiscent of destruction leading to destruction, driven by the greed, spite, masochism and sadism nurtured in this culture - “The bomb that caused this destruction was the last to be shot into the sky. It was launched shortly before the launching city was blown to smithereens.” It is interesting to look at how connected the entire world is and how some community based, non-oil dependent societies (most likely thriving on remote islands- or other places of isolation) are affected by the world’s massive oil aroused and reliant civilizations. “The whole world did not explode in the two days of constant attacks. Some remote islands were not affected, well not bombed at least. …the smoke from the destroyed continents flooded into their empty skies bringing with it the radiation that would mean the destruction of their societies as well.” I also wrote my blog on the global nuclear apocalypse, however at first I though this meant total annihilation after which there is only nothingness left, this was clearly the last part of the sequential collapse. However there is possibility for detail and extrapolation to eventual evolution in millions of years, as you have shown me. Is this really what is important? Once the natural Earth is no longer the cultivating, life bearing planet we imagine and know, when there is no life: what is then important and who is there to observe it? The true question is: how will the apocalypse start? Why? How can we prevent it? In addition to describing a scenario and attempting to describe ruin and nothingness (which is obscure/ unintelligible) connect it to oil deprivation, the civilizations psyche- why would such an apocalypse happen, consider the intent? Especially when it is clear that nuclear warfare would mean the demise of all human life? Go further in depth with this thought: “This is my what if, if nuclear weapons are used as a mass suicide/genocide technique to ease the suffering for people who do not know how to live without oil.” Rethinking this scenario I ask you and myself: A Nuclear or an Environmental Apocalypse?
